![]() It's very articulate, and semi-dark with the bronze shell. My DW cast bronze has a 5mm shell, and has a very sharp single 45. I'll report back when my Savage comes in. It sounded kind of dull compared to a Tama BB, which has the knife edge like Larry said. My old Gretsch Gold Series bell brass had a 3mm shell, and a rounded top and bottom. The Dunnett 2N snares have a rolled top bearing edge (Ludwig style) and a straight bottom bearing edge (Dunnett style). Of course, that's how the Dunnett-shelled Ludwig SS reissues were made, and they're a lot brighter, livelier, and louder, whereas the 70s kits are fairly controlled and pretty tubby. Very sharp attack and insanely responsive. Along with the undersized shell, it was a very different beast compared to your typical Ludwig, and a more controlled and a richer sound than your typical steel shell Sensitone or 80s Imperialstar.ĭunnetts of course have no radiused bearing edge, really the shell is so thin that it's basically a dull knife edge. Sonor ferromanganese snares actually have roundover edges. That slightly rounded 45 is what you see on the 70s stainless steel kits. (Not a scientific measurement.) A good portion of Ludwig snares I've seen have a slightly sharper edge on the bottom, too. It's probably got a radius of 1/16" or so. The SoniClear™ bearing edge comes standard on all new Mars and Armory drum kits and will be available in stores in March of 2014.I'd consider the classic Ludwig 45-degree Supraphonic edge to be a slightly rounded 45. This is a truly significant breakthrough that all our customers will benefit from." "The SONIClear™ Bearing Edge enables players to get a great sound even without much tuning experience. Specifically, players have had a difficult time tuning their drums and making them sound good because the apex of the edge is too far to the outside of the shell and they can't get the drumhead to sit flat" states Mike Robinson, Director of Marketing for KHS America. ![]() The player buying his first or second set definitely needs a tuning solution allowing them to be able to tune quicker and be able to play more. ![]() ![]() ![]() "Not a lot of effort has been made toward the improvement of the bearing edge on this level of set. The SoniClear™ bearing edge is designed to allow the drumhead to sit flatter and which increases the contact between the drumhead and shell and allows the head to sit flat on the edge, this produces a stronger and more centered pitch and makes the drums remarkably easy to tune. The result of that mission is the latest innovation from Mapex: The SONIClear™ bearing edge. Mapex wants drummers to spend less time tuning and be able to play more. The Mapex Drum Company set out to solve one of the biggest headaches of being a drummer the frustrations of tuning your drums. ![]()
